Your Dream Fishing Trip
Smithers is situated in the Bulkely Valley and the Bulkley River is a major fishing destination. In the autumn the Bulkley becomes part of Steelhead Paradise, along with nearby rivers including the Morice, Kispiox, Babine, Sustut and Skeena. Smaller steelhead streams inlulde the Copper and Suskwa. The Bulkley River contains four of the five Pacific salmon species: chinook (Spring or King), coho (silvers), sockeye and pink (humpies), plus the magical steelhead.
The Bulkley Valley though is studded with lakes and those lakes are home to rainbow trout, lake trout or char, cutthroat and dolly varden. We suggest you start your tour in one of the local fishing shops to get current information on what's hot. British Columbia is moving toward electronic fishing licenses and the shops can help you with that and provide you with a copy of the current freshwater fishing regulations.
Then - what's your pleasure? The lakes to the north of Smithers like Chapman, Doris and Tanglechain are great places to fish with small boats. Camping is available in Recreations Sites.
If you want to introduce this kids to fishing the easy way - try Tyhee Lake in Telkwa. There is large provincial campsite on the lake with boat launch and great swimming beaches. After you've enjoyed casting for trout the family can enjoy a cook out on the beach or a leg stretch on the trails.
If you enjoy a change of scenery as part of your fishing trip, lakes worth visiting include Irrigation Lake west of Houston, Dennis Lake on Hudson Bay Mountain, Ross Lake east of Hazelton.
