Snowmobiling
Mountains covered in snow; hundreds of miles of terrain; groomed trails and untracked wilderness - that's snowmobiling around Smithers. The Smithers Snowmobile Association grooms trails in three areas and maintains six mountain cabins. There's a heart pounding hillclimb in March. All in all - Smithers and the Bulkley Valley is a snowmobilers heaven - bring your sled and check it out.
There are three main areas for sledding in the Smithers area: The Onion; The Dome; and The Microwave.
The Onion is situated north of Smithers in the Babine Mountain Provincial Park. To get there, drive east from Smithers over the Bulkley River and turn left immediately onto the Old Babine Lake Road. Follow this road for 25 km to the snowmobile parking area. The Onion offers incredible sledding for all levels of riders. The Smithers Smowmobile Association maintains two cabins on the mountain. Both are propane equipped and provide excellent shelter.
The Dome is located east of Smithers. Travel about 6 km eastbound on Route 16 to Eckman (New Babine Lake) Road. Turn left on Eckman and follow the road for about 19.5 km, just past the intersection of Eckman and Old Babine Lake Road. Watch for a small parking lot with a sign "Dome Mountain Trail". From here, groomed trails greet visitors.
The Microwave is located approximately half an hour south of Telkwa. Head south from the flashing light in Telkwa. Cross over the Bulkley River and follow Coalmine Road until it becomes "Telkwa Forest Service Road". Follow this road until 19 km and then watch for Road 119 on your right. This is the Microwave Road. Ensure that you park well off the road as this is an active logging road.
