Moricetown Canyon

Moricetown/Smithers, BC

First Nations people gaff and net salmon using traditonal methods at this fierce canyon on the Bulkley River (40 km west of Smithers).

Directions: Follow Route 16 west 40 km to Moricetown. There's a pullout and rest area overlooking the canyon. Or, drive slightly further and turn right, crossing the bridge. Immediately turn right and there's another rest stop with a better view of the canyon and the fishing. Best viewing is late June to mid-July when the Spring (King) salmon runs are at their peak. Smaller species follow through August.

Non-native fishing is permitted downstream from the canyon at "Idiot Rock". Day pass for fishing may be purchased from the Moricetown Band.
