Malkow Lookout

Smithers, BC V0J 2N0

From Malkow Lookout, you have a lofty, 360 degree view of the valley. This is a climb suitable for young children and those unable to hike more rugged areas. Take a lunch with you as there is a picnic table provided.

Directions: Driving east from Smithers, cross the Bulkley River bridge and make a quick left turn onto Old Babine Lake Road. Follow this road for about 3 km until it starts to make a fairly steep ascent to the right. On your left, you'll see McCabe Road. Turn left here and drive 1.6 km. On your left you'll see a small parking lot beside a fenced pasture. A trail will be plainly visible going through the pasture. Go through the gate (make sure to close it) and hike the pasture trail for a few hundred meters. A narrow trail will take you through the forest for another few hundred meters until you reach a gravel road. Go left and follow a winding road for about 30 minutes. The final ascent to the lookout is fairly steep but well worth the effort.

Description: Situated in the middle of the valley, Malkow Lookout served for many years as a forest fire lookout. It is now home to a cell phone transmitter and a wireless internet provider. From the Lookout, you're able to see in all directions around the valley. This is a climb suitable for young children and those unable to hike more rugged areas. Take a lunch with you as there is a picnic table provided.
