Alpine Man is the embodiment of the "Alpine Theme" so visible in Smithers. Alpine Man stands in the middle of Main Street to welcome our visitors.
In 1972, Alderman Andy Stalker suggested that a theme be introduced to the beautiful town of Smithers. The main purpose for this new theme was to give Smithers a unique and memorable appearance. As Bavarian and other European styles were already common, the Alpine theme was an ideal choice. As you'll see in Smithers, red brick sidewalks and Bavarian roof facades are common on many Smithers Shops.
Alpine Man originally was the center piece for the Edelweiss Motel in Rock Creek, BC. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1973. Through the generousity of the Smithers Lions Club, Alpine Man was rescued from his temporary home at Christina Lake and brought to Smithers. After some renovations, Alpine Man took his place on Main Street, welcoming visitors ever since.
Alpine Man welcomes you to Smithers BC.
