The first "Mining Matters" article was published on March 10, 2010. This is a bi-weekly column that is published in the Interior News, posted on the Town of Smithers website, the Smithers Exploration Group website, and the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako Mining Portal. This article profiles the importance of the mining industry to the community and is a result of the joint initiative between the Smithers Exploration Group and the Town of Smithers.

Traffic Marking - 2010 Contract

Public Hearing - Official Community Plan

A Public Hearing is scheduled to take place at the Municipal Hall (1027 Aldous Street) on March 23, 2010, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Public Hearing is an opportunity for the community to provide comments to Council on the final OCP. Written submissions (mail or electronic) must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23rd.

Residential Composters

As per Town of Smithers Garbage Collection Bylaw No. 1425, compostable materials, such as lawn and garden waste are not permitted for removal as garbage. These materials can be dropped off at the Work's Yard compost bin at 2888 19th Avenue or residents can properly compost these materials, in a garden composter, for their own personal use in gardens and flowerbeds.

The Town of Smithers Works and Operations Department will be offering 11 cubic foot residential composters, to Town of Smithers residents, at a bulk price of $55 plus tax.

If you are interested in purchasing a composter, please call the Works Department at 250-847-1649, or visit the Town Office at 1027 Aldous Street.

Smithers Olympic Torch Relay Event

Day 93 of the Olympic Torch Relay saw a massive event in Smithers, coinciding with the ‘Spirit of the Mountains’ winter festival antics on Main Street.

From our annual Fall Fair & Rodeo to two-time Juno award-winning musician Alex Cuba, Midsummer Music Festival and the Creative Roots dance group, Smithers will keep you entertained.
