Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program
SMITHERS - The Town of Smithers' Recreation, Parks and Culture Department is very excited to offer the Steve Nash Youth Basketball program for youth aged 8-16 again this year starting March 22. "There were 144 young players in its first year in 2009, and from the interest expressed thus far from parents, players, volunteer coaches and referees, the Town expects the spring league to be even bigger this year. The Town has been able to secure more time at the two local high schools for the older age groups and has many returning coaches demonstrating the desire of the community to grow this initiative" said Mayor Cress Farrow.
The weekend of March 26-28 is going to be a busy one. All of the new and experienced referees will receive, free of charge, a Steve Nash Youth Basketball referee clinic on the evening of March 26th. Smithers will be hosting Canada's National Women's Basketball Coach Allison McNeill. This will be her second visit to Smithers. She will be offering a free coaching clinic on the morning of March 27th for all of the basketball league coaches and will be offering free basketball skill clinics in the afternoon of March 27th for the youth players aged 12-13 and 14-16.
"I am looking forward to coming up to Smithers to work with both Steve Nash Youth Basketball coaches and athletes. I visited Smithers last year and really enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the Basketball community. There are some great things going on with the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program in Smithers and I am happy to be part of it!" stated Coach McNeill.
Lawrie Johns of Basketball BC said today "Basketball BC is thrilled that we can again support our Steve Nash Youth Basketball program in Smithers. The excitement and tremendous work of the Town makes Smithers a model for our over 9,000 youth basketball participants throughout BC. Being able to send Coach McNeill there to assist the coaches and participants as they get ready for a new season is something we are very pleased with. Her record as a High Performance coach speaks for itself but her passion for youth and youth sports makes her one of a kind. We look forward to hearing the results of the clinic and the upcoming season."
