The Community of Smithers has been to Hollywood and Hollywood has been to Smithers.
In 2005 the Disney movie, Eight Below was filmed on Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers. For two months, the town hosted up to 200 crew and cast and shared the movie excitement.
“The Prairie” on Hudson Bay Mountain was transformed into an Antarctica research station. The local downhill ski resort supplied support and one its parking areas became the backlot. Residents of the community enjoyed the excitement of movie making and eagerly supplied what the production company needed.
A year later, Director Frank Marshall was welcomed back to host an advance screening of the movie to a packed house.
Other film and TV projects filmed in and around Smithers include: Lost Nuke, a documentary on a real Broken Arrow; Alice, I Think; Mantracker.
