Show dates: May 1 - May 26, 2012.The Smithers Art Gallery's May exhibition, "The Fine Art of Nature", is an interactive installation connecting children and families with nature. This mixed-media group show will turn the gallery into a family nature-house, with artworks inspired by the natural world sitting alongside live and preserved specimens. There will be an emphasis on opportunities for a creative, hands-on experience: the 'Nest’ will provide a cozy space for young children to hang out, create artwork, do puzzles, read, or simply look at natural forms, while the 'Table of Contents’ will be set up as a naturalists'/artists' desk with an opportunity to observe specimens and sketch/paint observations made at the gallery. There is also an amazing program of workshops for children and adults throughout the month at the gallery, from making animal masks, to learning bird songs, to making cottonwood balm. Workshops are free and include drop-in activities for kids, evening workshops open to everyone, and pre-bookable programs for schools. See attached schedule for full details. "The Fine Art of Nature" exhibition at the Smithers Art Gallery is a springboard for "Out of the Box: Connecting Kids with Nature",  a series of free, nature-based field trips for children and youth that will run twice a month from June to November.
