Smithers is Hockeyville!

The new Smithers Hockeyville Website is live at www.smithershockeyville.com.

Welcome to the "Steelheads of Smithers Road to Hockeyville" petition for a National Hockey Day in honour of Canada's favourite sport. Our collective passion for hockey is one of the defining characteristics of Canadians.
An American could tell you where they were when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. A European can easily remember the fall of the Berlin Wall. But for Canada ˜ Where were you in '72

On September 28, 1972, Paul Henderson scored the winning goal in Game 8 of the '72 Summit Series. That goal, that game and that day was a spectacular and unifying moment of national pride.

And the Steelheads of Smithers believe this date should not be forgotten in Canadian history.
September 28 should be designated National Hockey Day to celebrate and honour Canada's greatest game.

Please take the time to add your name to this Petition. Upon receipt of 5000 signatures, we intend to present the Petition to our member of parliament and asking him to take it to a federal level.

Thank you hockey fans!!!!

GO SMITHERS STEELHEADS!!

Required Details

Smithers Steelheads Road to Hockeyville

Dear Hockey Fans,

Smithers BC has applied to compete for the title of Kraft Hockeyville 2006. The contest requires that we demonstrate our community spirit and creativeness over a 5-stage elimination process. The competition will be aired on national television beginning in March 2006, with the final 5 teams competing for top spot during the final episode aired during the intermission of the Stanley Cup finals. The winning team receives $10,000 in sport equipment to be donated to local minor hockey, $25,000 in upgrades to our local arena and finally, a NHL exhibition game to be played in our community September 2006. (estimated value of exhibition game in ticket sales, promotion and advertisement is $400,000.00)

In the initial elimination stage, 50 teams will be selected from across the country. We believe that Smithers has an excellent chance of being chosen to be in the top 50 for a number of reasons. Smithers has an extensive hockey history (numerous NHL stars), a thriving minor hockey program, a wealth of creativity, ability and motivation in it’s residents, and all of this, in one of the most beautiful settings in the country.

Once being chosen as being in the top 50, we proceed to stage 2 where we will be asked to present a 2-minute video showcasing Smithers and it’s community spirit. If this is as far as we get in the elimination process, the exposure of a nationally televised clip of Smithers will be well worth our effort. We believe that Smithers has a lot to offer, yet remains relatively unknown on a national level, the benefits of exposure could be immeasurable. As each stage of the competition progresses, the exposure becomes even greater, with the final group of 5 receiving exposure to a potential audience of millions during the Stanley Cup Finals.

The initial application stage is relatively simple, however, if we are chosen to proceed to stage 2 we will require assistance from the entire community. It will be very important to show that we have the ENTIRE communities support on this project. The town office, chamber of commerce, tourism, minor hockey etc etc.., will all need to be involved.( A good example of this is Golden BC has received support from the municipality to change the name of the town to HOCKEYVILLE BC)

We believe that this could be very unique opportunity for our town and also feel that this project is a very timely one given the current fund raising for a second sheet of ice.

We should have an indication soon as to our eligibility for the contest. At that point we would invite all interested groups, organizations and individuals to contact us with their ideas.

Sincerely,

M.Davey
Hockeyville committee
