Driving east from Smithers, cross the Bulkley River bridge and make a quick left turn onto Old Babine Lake Road. Follow this road for about 3 km until it starts to make a fairly steep ascent to the right. On your left, you'll see McCabe Road. Turn left here and drive 1.6 km. On your left you'll see a small parking lot beside a fenced pasture. A trail will be plainly visible going through the pasture. Go through the gate (make sure to close it) and hike the pasture trail for a few hundred meters. A narrow trail will take you through the forest for another few hundred meters until you reach a gravel road. Go left and follow a winding road for about 30 minutes. The final ascent to the lookout is fairly steep but well worth the effort.
Situated in the middle of the valley, Malkow Lookout served for many years as a forest fire lookout. It is now home to a cell phone transmitter and a wireless internet provider. From the Lookout, you're able to see in all directions around the valley. This is a climb suitable for young children and those unable to hike more rugged areas. Take a lunch with you as there is a picnic table provided.
